A photographer’s guide to prepare for a photoshoot

Each photoshoot is different from the others. A photographer has to analyze numerous points for every shoot, like clients, requirements, expectations, shots, location, concept and storyline.

How to prepare for a photoshoot?

Every photographer wishes that their shoots run smoothly without any hiccups. Planning and management can pave way to an efficient photoshoot, leading to the desired results. This makes it essential for a photographer to plan everything in advance and ensure that they have covered all their bases. The time and effort dedicated in the planning will help them enjoy satisfying shoot days.

A successful photo shoot requires the photographer to plan ahead, research, do the groundwork and be organized at every step. Here are some points that a photographer must keep in mind while planning for a photoshoot.

1. Understand client requirements for a shoot

The first and foremost thing is to be on the same page with the client. A clear understanding of the requirements, vision, and desired results can act like ‘work half done’.

2. Clearly outline the purpose of the photoshoot

A photographer must outline the purpose of the photoshoot, the storyline, the narrative to be created, the target audience, and the publication channels. When a photographer knows what the client wants to achieve with a shoot, they can coherently work with their team to create stunning visuals.

3. Create a concept and develop a mood board

The photographer must create a conceptual brief about the photoshoot. It must include the purpose, mood, lighting, theme, styling, and hair and makeup concepts for the shoot. It is also essential to add visual references to the selected concept. A mood board has sketches, images, text, and words that describe the vision of the shoot. It helps the photographer and the client in visualizing the desired outcome.

A photographer may even structure and plan the shots they want to capture. A sequential execution of the planned shots can save a lot of time, energy, and effort.

4. Scout the location

A photographer must scout the perfect location for the photoshoot. Finalizing the shoot’s venue has multiple benefits. It allows the photographer to be familiar with the place and analyse the place for set up, safety, distance from the city, and other concerns. The permits required to shoot at the location must also be considered. It is also important to keep a second location in mind, as a backup plan, in case of an unexpected hiccup.

5. Create an equipment checklist

A photographer must carefully create a checklist of all the equipment they and their team would require on the day of the shoot. This would include their camera, lenses, SD cards, gear, and other essentials. The photographer must also plan for contingencies and keep additional equipment. This planning would play an important role in the smooth flow of the shoot.

6. Finalize the Plan

The photographer and the client must be on the same page. Before heading for the shoot, the photographer must ensure that everything is ready and progressing as per plan.
